Malcolm X does such a great job of describing the vivid details of the world of hustlers in Harlem: the different levels of drug dealing, prostitution, stealing, his brother's hustle, and so on. I think that's one reason the book is still read--he makes a specific historical time come alive vividly for his readers. Instead of just saying he sold pot to musicians, he says one of them smoked through a chicken thigh bone. That's a priceless detail!
