- On p. 88, Malcolm X write about African Americans being "both servants and psychologists." What does that mean?
- What is the significance of the white patrons in bars who would go up to black patrons and say, "You're just as good as I am--I want you to know that!" Why does Malcolm X tell this story? (p. 129).
- Malcolm X writes of the riots in Harlem in 1935. Why do you think people riot? Why do they destroy the businesses and property in their own neighborhoods?
- Malcolm X writes of how mathematical geniuses like West Indian Archie became numbers runners and writes that, "in another kind of society, their exceptional mathematical talents might have been better used" (135). Why didn't mid-century America better use their talents?

What questions does the reading raise for you so far?
ReplyDeleteWhy was world war 2 so crucial for colored people ?
If interracial couples were caught by the community what would happen?
How did colored people get into the military ?
I was actually thinking the same thing while reading that chapter as well. i was wondering how people would treat people of color so bad and then demand them to fight for a country that doesn't even view them as human beings.
Deletei agree with the both of you guys because i always thought what was the interracial couple was going through during this time. how hard it was to hide there relationship from the public, because the dont want to get into trouble or get judged.
DeleteBy Malcom talking about how the white patrons tell the black patrons that they are just as good as they are is significant. He is supporting the idea that there are no differences between the white people and the African American people. That phrase is a sort of uplifting sentence and is is a way to boost the morales of people that believe that they have lost their way because they think that they are inferior. Judging by the book so far I can see that Malcom doesn’t think that one of the races are mightier then the other.

ReplyDeleteMid century america neglects the mathematical talents of people like west Indian Archie because they are colored and at that time no white person would want to put a person of color above them and not to mention they wouldn't have even gave him the time to prove himself and his mathematical talent because they felt as if they were above them in a way due to their skin color.
ReplyDeleteQuestions that raise for me in Malcolm X are:
ReplyDeleteWhat did interracial couple where going through during this time where they couldn't be together?
how did War world 2 effect people of color?
why is people of color don't get the recognition they deserve?
I think during WW2, It did not matter if they were black or white because there was a bigger reason that was representing the U.S. That is why I think during the war people did not make distinction between skin colors. I think black people were not recognized of their achievements because they were afraid of showing their talents or be stolen from white people and they did not receive any credit for it. simply because they are black.
DeleteI think people riot to show where they stand or their position. I find it to be an aggressive way of protesting. Sometimes these these riots can be dangerous like there could be fatalities and destruction of buildings. I think rioting also shows a strong disagreement against two different parties or group of people and in this way it is how they express their anger.
ReplyDeleteI believe people riot because they do not have anyone to look up to. People riot because they need help and they do not have the proper resources to help them with their needs. I also believe the people destroyed their own property and business because they wonder how everyone else can be successful but them. "How did they do it? What steps did they take to have their own? What am I doing wrong?" I would think jealousy plays a factor when it comes down to ruining a business, especially when it is a stable business. Back in Malcom X's time, there were not a lot of black owned businesses. Not mention black people having minimal paying jobs. the people wanted more money. They look at is if "I can't have money, why should anyone else have it?"
ReplyDeleteWhy didn't mid-century America better use their talents?
ReplyDeleteI think because it was different at that time. The talent that you have can't provide for a living an those times. People have to be smarter and think on things that would benefit them in long terms. They didn't have the education that we have today. They didn't get a chance to better their knowledge and develop their talents. White people also don't want black people to be better than them. Also, when we watched the scene that Malcolm mentioned in the book was interesting because I can't understand how he describes but watching it makes me understand it more than imagining what's happening.
The mid- century America didn't better use their talents because they were all used to the same old ones. Also because the time period they were living in didn't let them to do so. Why? because society preferred white people more then the colored ones.
ReplyDeletePeople in this time period started riots as an attempt to take matters into their own hands. In order to make their voices heard, they expressed their anger on the community that was already being taken advantage of. Especially in this moment in time, people were getting fed up with the way they were treated and the way they reflected this was by destroying property and anything they can get their hands on in that time of rage. This was of course in order to force the higher ups to change and fix the problem.
ReplyDeleteI think Malcolm Used to go to the movies regularly because those videos show another perspective of the black society. That is why Malcolm could lose his mind watching movies for hours because they were reflecting a black community in a musical. those two things were part of Malcolm's life and represented him. In those times, black participation was really little, so that is why he mentioned those movies because was a completely different thing at that age.
