Why did Malcolm X go to jail with his friends shorty for 10 years?

In chapter ten we find out that Malcolm X and his friend shorty got ten years because they were committed a crime with white girls. But they got more into trouble then the girls. because during their time white and blacks can't be seen together it was against the rules. If white and black people were seen together they would either get a warning or they would both go to jail. which is not faith because you can control who you want to be with or be friends with. you should do whatever you want.
