At the end of the chapter, "Saved," Malcolm is in a religion class in
jail w/ a white teacher. Malcolm asks "What color was Paul?" This leads
toward a discussion of whether Paul was black or not, and then what
color Jesus was. How did you react toward this scene? Regardless of your
own faith, or lack thereof, how do you see Jesus when you imagine him,
if indeed you do? Why do you think you see Jesus the way you do? How do
you know what he's supposed to look like?
Other questions:
- It's Malcolm X's feeling that he and Shorty got ten years for
robbery because they were working w/ white women, not because of the
robbery. Why would they get a stiffer sentence for that?
- Why did Bimbi (ch. 10) make such an impression upon Malcolm?
- Why does Elijah Muhammad teach that white people are devils?
- In what ways has history been "whitened" according to the Nation of Islam?
What other things did you notice? What questions does the reading raise for you?
Bimbi made a big impact to Malcolm because he was the one who encourage him to use his brain and start reading books in the library. Malcolm was amazed on how the inmates gather and listen to Bimbi talk about science, history etc. Also, Bimbi don't curse at all so Malcolm was amazed by this. He compare himself to him. In my opinion, Malcolm want to be in the position. He want to be heard by other people.
ReplyDeleteNice response, Belle.
DeleteMalcolm's family changed through out the time. Especially his brothers and sister. I think what they experienced on their childhood made a big impact on them. Their decision making is influenced by their experiences.
ReplyDeleteBimbi has made a really big impression upon Malcolm, because Bimbi is a absolute opposite of the people that Malcolm is usually around. Malcolm was surprise on how other inmates would look up to Bimbi and listen to his talk about anything. What shocked him the most was the way that Bimbi talks with so much respect, no slang words, and no curses at all. Bimbi also made an impression on Malcolm life by encouraging him and showing him to start from somewhere. For example, showed him to use his head and to start reading.
ReplyDeleteAccording to my faith and from my point of view I imagine Jesus with white skin, clear eyes, tall and with long blond hair. The reason why I imagine him with these features is because in the movies and some TV shows that I saw when I was little, they showed him in this way. Although nobody knows what he really looks like, maybe he doesn't even look like a human figure.
ReplyDeleteHistory has been “whitened” according to the Nation of Islam because back in the beginning of the civilizations there were only black people, but because of the scientific who experimented on people, the result was white people which according to them, they just didn’t came out white but evils, they didn’t have no moral nor respect, the white community destroy everything that was good and when they got the world, they been ruling on their way, disappearing all evidence about blacks history and the beginning of their civilization in the world.
